Say “Yes” When You Really Want to Say “No”

first_imgIt’s 3 p.m. on Friday and your boss has already told you that you can head out early for the weekend.  You’re wrapping up a few items and planning to leave shortly when a coworker comes to you and asks you for some help with a project they’ve been working on.  Your first instinct is to say you’re sorry but you have plans and need to leave early for the weekend.  While that may get you a few extra minutes of weekend sunshine, you could be missing out on some valuable work experiences.Young professionals who are early in their career should act like sponges, soaking up any and all experiences they can.  Saying “yes” to extra projects will help you get exposure to new things, make it easier to meet new people and allow for you to learn new ways to work with others. 1.       Exposure to new things:  Oftentimes, we avoid projects that involve things that we aren’t familiar with because it makes us feel vulnerable.  The problem with never expanding into new things is that we limit ourselves to specific tasks and/or functions.  This might be ok if you know from day 1 that you want to specialize in a specific function but if you aren’t sure what path to take or what function is right for you, it makes sense to gain exposure to a number of different things.  On the other hand, when requesting to learn about and get involved in different things, make sure you aren’t spreading yourself too thin.  You may have heard the expression “Jack of all trades, master of none.”  That is to say that someone is able to perform a whole host of duties or responsibilities but when it comes to identifying the expert in something, we go to someone else.  Once you have identified your path, start being more selective in the projects you request to be a part of. 2.       Meet new people:  Taking on new projects allows for us to meet and network with new coworkers.  Networking with new people allows for us to build our contacts within the organization.  When you work with someone from another department or from elsewhere within your department, you have opened a door which may lead to quicker response times when requesting information from them or their department.  Also, networking internally may create a positive impact on our external connections.  3.       Learn new ways to work with others:  When we work with team members on a regular basis, we recognize the optimal ways to communicate with them.  Working with new people can help us remain flexible in our approaches.  It could be that your current team functions simply utilizing email communications to collaborate on projects.  If that is the case, try to seek out teams that use telephone or video conferencing to help you develop new ways of getting your point and feedback across.last_img read more

Lefty Startup Offers Free Apps for Democratic Candidates

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The founders of Campaign Live want to level the playing field for political candidates running for state, county and local office – if those candidates are Democrats. The month-old company has been offering Facebook, MySpace, Web and mobile Web apps for between $0 and $999, depending on a client’s ability to pay. But today Campaign Live announced a generous promotion: free apps for any Democratic candidate during election season between now and Nov. 2.Campaign Live sells pre-fabricated or “white-label” Facebook, MySpace, and mobile Web apps which can be tweaked and branded to look custom-made. Campaign Live advises its clients to ask supporters with iPhones to bookmark the mobile Web app on the homescreen so it mimics a native iPhone app.An example of the Campaign Live mobile web app.The apps are basic, but they offer the functions most crucial to a candidate: meet the candidate, read news, “tweet” or “like” the campaign, and most importantly – “volunteer” and “contribute.” Donations are collected via the online Democratic fundraising clearinghouse Act Blue.Candidates including Jerry Brown, a Democrat running for Governor in California, and Matt Dunne, a Democrat running for Governor in Vermont, are already using the service. Campaign Live also builds apps for issue campaigns such as fundraising for the Gulf Coast clean-up necessitated by the BP oil spill.“We want to make sure that anyone who wants to run for any office or drive any issue campaign can do it, and money and technology are not the barriers to entry,” co-founder Rob Kramer told political news site The Uptake last month at Netroots Nation, a conference for progressive bloggers. But by anyone, Kramer and his partners really mean Democrats. “We don’t think non-partisan sites ilke this work very well, primarily because we think it’s important to put your money where your mouth is,” Kramer said. The price for a Campaign Live app is imminently affordable even for the most underground political candidates at the local-est levels who are still learning about social media. Federal candidates are fairly savvy, but local and state candidates are still “on the learning curve” when it comes to Web and mobile apps, Kramer said. “State and local candidates are just getting up to speed with this stuff,” he said.Campaign Live is getting a lot of interest from candidates thanks to the promotion, he said, and he is talking to national organizations including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and Democratic Municipal Officials.Kramer said he has not heard of any similar “apps for all” effort from the other side. “Democrats tend to be pretty ahead of the curve in terms of this type of technology,” he said. Blockchain, Smart Contracts, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning in Healthcare

first_imgToday most healthcare data exists in silos. There is only limited sharing of healthcare data. There is massive, largely untapped potential for securely sharing healthcare data to improve the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of care. Healthcare is under increasing pressure to reduce the cost of care. Exacerbating this are the trends of aging populations and rampant chronic diseases. Several key new technologies are poised to disrupt healthcare, alleviate these problems, and pave the way for both improved quality of patient care, and reduced cost of care. In this article, I take a brief look at how these technologies can help, how they relate to each other, and how they enable and build upon each other.Layer 0. Healthcare Data in SilosToday, healthcare data is mostly in silos within enterprises across providers, payers, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, and increasingly also with patients and consumer health organizations. There is massive untapped potential to both improve the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of care with targeted safe sharing of this healthcare data.Layer 1. Blockchain Paves the Way for Secure SharingIn the near term, blockchain, or decentralized ledger technology, can be used across a broad variety of existing B2B networks of health and life sciences organizations to enable secure discovery, location, and sharing of healthcare data. Examples of such networks include clearinghouses, health information exchanges, provider credentialing networks, drug supply chain networks, medical device networks, and many more. See Healthcare Use Cases for Blockchain – 5 Key Factors for Success for more info on this.In these networks, it is not that blockchain will replace enterprise systems used today, or that blockchains will store all the patient information, but rather blockchains will augment such enterprise systems in the role of enterprise B2B network middleware, and enable the secure exchange of minimal but sufficient data to enable specific healthcare use cases. For more on this see Healthcare Blockchain: What Goes On Chain Stays on Chain. For example, in a given use case such as health information exchange, the blockchain could be used to store metadata about healthcare records, enabling the blockchain to function as a “record locator service.” This, in turn, enables discovery of relevant records as needed by healthcare organizations across blockchain network, and subsequent point-to-point secure sharing of such records to enable improved quality of patient care, and reduced cost of care. Longer term, blockchains will enable entirely new use cases around which fundamentally new types of healthcare organizations and new B2B networks coalesce, and the impacts of these could be revolutionary, but this will take more time. In the near term on the evolutionary adoption curve, blockchain will likely need to first prove itself out in existing B2B healthcare networks.Breaches and ransomware in healthcare have reached alarming levels of impact and frequency of occurrence. To enable blockchain to reach its full potential and minimize associated breaches and ransomware, which could quickly tarnish and stunt the use of blockchains, it is essential that we not take the security of blockchains for granted, but rather address the security, privacy, and compliance aspects up front as we design and implement blockchains. See Healthcare Blockchain: Does Your Chain Have any Weak Links? for more on this.As blockchain proves its value and healthcare grows to depend on blockchain for more and more mission-critical services, it is also imperative that we don’t take the availability (timely and reliable access) of blockchains and decentralized ledgers for granted, but also know the availability benefits and limitations of blockchain and address this key requirement up front in design and implementation of healthcare blockchains. See Will Your Healthcare Blockchain be Available When You Need It? for more on this.Interoperability continues to be a challenge, and interoperability must be maximized for blockchain to realize its full potential. This impacts both information stored on the blockchain as well as information stored off the blockchain that is pointed to by blockchain metadata. Blockchain metadata can, of course, include information such as format and version information that can be used to help enable interoperability.Layer 2. Smart Contracts Automate Transactions, Improving Efficiency and SpeedA critical mass of healthcare B2B networks using blockchains, and a critical mass of healthcare data on these blockchains, will lead to the ability to improve the efficiency and speed of transactions by automating the processing of such transactions right on the blockchain using code stored on the blockchain. These nuggets of code on the blockchain are called smart contracts. They can trigger when certain transactions are appended to the blockchain. When triggered, smart contracts execute the results of their execution and can, in turn, produce new output transactions that are then appended to the same blockchain. Note that smart contracts are not an all-or-nothing thing. Smart contracts can be introduced first for basic transactions that require only simple code. This could include, for example, simple pre-authorizations that are traditionally sent from providers to payers for processing. Through the use of blockchain and smart contracts in a clearinghouse type blockchain B2B network consisting of healthcare provider and payer organizations, these simple pre-authorizations could be handled directly on the blockchain by smart contracts rather than in the payer’s enterprise systems. This both enables speed and efficiencies to providers, and also offloads authorization transaction loads from payer systems to the blockchain network, helping to improve efficiency and drive down the cost of patient care. Over time more and more smart contracts can automate more and more types of transactions on blockchains delivering incrementally improved efficiency and speed of transactions, and associated cost reductions. More complex and new types of transactions may continue to be handled by enterprise systems within healthcare organizations connected to blockchains, but over time the fraction of transactions handled off chain are likely to decrease since there are such compelling benefits in efficiency and speed with handling as many transactions as possible using smart contracts executing directly on the blockchains.Layer 3. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Enable New InsightsThe rise of artificial intelligence and machine learning has been spectacular and continues to accelerate and promises to deliver major value across a broad variety of healthcare applications from personalized and precision medicine, to many kinds of image analysis, enhanced treatments, chatbots and virtual assistants, cybersecurity, and many more. These technologies are enabled and powered by data, by vast quantities of data, and their accuracy, usefulness, and benefits improve as more data is made available to them. The fact that much of this data is spread out across and locked within multiple silos across multiple healthcare organizations, and the sharing of such data is either very limited or non-existent, means that today the maximum value of AI and ML cannot be fully realized.Blockchain and smart contracts enable secure and efficient data sharing and processing across B2B networks of healthcare organizations, and these technologies pave the way for increased discovery and access to healthcare data across these networks to power AI and ML. As blockchains and smart contracts grow they will, increasingly over time, provide a foundation that enables AI and ML to fully realize their value to healthcare, radically improving the quality of patient care, while also delivering major reductions in the cost of patient care.CollaborationWhat opportunities and challenges are you seeing with blockchain, smart contracts, artificial intelligence, and machine learning in healthcare? We need these games. These players need the big games to be challenged.”Of course, everyone says we’ve won the last five games but [they have] not been [against] big opposition. But you can only beat the teams you play and, for us to get tested and go to the next level, you need those games. first_imgScotland coach Clarke snaps at Redknapp over Robertson claimsby Paul Vegas16 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveSteve Clarke has dismissed claims from former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp that Andrew Robertson is being hurt by Scotland’s lack of quality. Redknapp last night highlighted how the Scotland captain had struggled to impose his usual game during his country’s Euro 2020 qualifying defeats to Russia and Belgium in the last international break.Ahead of this week’s Group I games against Russia and San Marino, Scotland boss Clarke has snapped back at Redknapp.“If I go down the route of answering one pundit then I have to answer every single pundit who comes out with something that they’re paid to say,” said Clarke.”He’s a paid pundit, he’s got his opinion and Jamie also has a Liverpool connection so maybe he’s tried to protect Andy a little bit.”But Andy is a big boy. He doesn’t need protecting. Every time I name a squad Andy is the first to reply, ‘When is it gaffer? I’ll see you there!’.“So I’m not going to go down the route of talking about every pundit who has something bad to say about the national team.”The only way to stop them saying bad things is to start winning games. I don’t hide from that fact.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

First off in [sic] would like to thank everyone who has believed in me throughout this process. I want to thank my family, friends, coaches and teammates for their much needed support. I want to thank the college coahces who have invested their time and given me the opportunity to play for their schools. After much discussion with my family, I would like to further my academic and athletic career and commit to The University of Arkansas. WooPig!!! #UnCommon17Brown’s decision was foreshadowed by fellow Arkansas commit Koilan Jackson, a three-star wide receiver, who tweeted the decision a few minutes before it became official. My Boy @yvngsimba3 finally a HOG now Congrats on the commitment dude! Welcome to the Family— Koilan Jackson™ (@KoilanJack3) July 28, 2016In addition to being the No. 1 recruit in Arkansas, 247Sports ranks Montaric Brown as the nation’s No. 18 safety.Brown chose Arkansas over Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and others. With Brown’s decision, Arkansas now has 18 players in the 2017 class. He is the second safety and fourth defensive back to join Arkansas’ class.Keeping top players in state is vital for any team, especially Arkansas. Unlike other SEC programs, the Razorbacks don’t have a ton of elite players in their backyard, so hanging on to a guy like Brown is essential. Bret Bielema and the Hogs have landed four of the top 20 recruits out of Arkansas.last_img read more

Sport Fishing Groups Oppose Walkers Fish Board Nomination

Fields has worked in commercial fishing and fisheries policy. The legislature must confirm Fields to fill a three-year term starting in July.
